WORKSHOP DATES
UK WORKSHOP DATES FROM SEPTEMBER 2009 BELOW
FAYETTEVILLE, TENNESSEE, USA WORKSHOP DETAILS BELOW
Join award-winning British wildlife artist, Vic Bearcroft, for an in-depth “Wildlife in Pastel” workshop at the Fayetteville-Lincoln county arts center in Fayetteville, TN. Following on from highly successful workshops in the UK, along with a best-selling TV & DVD series, Vic has now responded to requests from artists in the U.S. to run a series of pastel workshops in the States.
There will be a 3-day workshop at the arts center, covering all aspects of painting animals in pastel; from underpainting, fur texture, eyes and noses to backgrounds, composition and using reference photos. Over the 3 days, you will also complete a full wildlife painting to take home and frame.
This will be followed by a special 1-day workshop at the “Tigers for Tomorrow” wildlife sanctuary, in Attalla, AL, which is home to big cats, wolves, bears and other native species. Here, you will get the chance to observe these beautiful animals at close quarters, take reference photos for future paintings, and paint a portrait of one of the animals under Vic’s tuition.
Both workshops are suitable for all levels. All materials and light refreshments will be provided.

2009
Monday 7th December 1 Day Wolf Workshop (UK WCT) (£80)
Join Vic for a wild encounter with a difference. Spend the day at the UK Wolf Conservation Trust, where your day will begin with a talk about wolves, the Trust and what they do to support wolf conservation. Then, a rare chance to meet and photograph the wolves at close range - the first of two photographic sessions, which will enable you to observe and gather some great reference material of the wolves in their winter coats for your own future paintings.
Leading up to lunch, follow Vic's expert tuition and guidance to begin your own pastel painting of one of the Trust's own wolves. No need to worry if you are unsure of your drawing skills, as the velour paper has a 'pencil' outline pre-printed onto it, so all you need to do is concentrate on the pastel painting. At lunchtime, there will be a chance to browse the shop to purchase souvenirs of the truly unique day, or just listen to the wolves howling.
After lunch, there will be the second photographic session, after which you will complete your pastel painting ready to take home and frame. All materials and light refreshments are included, we advise attendees to bring a packed lunch.
Please wear sensible footwear and bring warm clothes - the wolves won't need it! 40% from the workshop will be donated directly to UK WCT, to help support wolf conservation projects in Europe, so you will be helping a good cause as well as having fun!
Suitable for all levels. All materials and tuition provided, along with light refreshments.
Venue: UK Wolf Conservation trust, Beenham, Reading, Berkshire.

SUNDAY 24th January 1 Day Cheetah in watercolour Workshop (£50)
Do you enjoy using watercolour, and would like to try the medium for wildlife? Or perhaps you’ve never tried watercolour, and are interested in giving it a try. Using pre-outlined watercolour paper, you will learn the techniques of creating soft, delicate, yet realistic animal paintings in waterclour. From initial blocking out of white areas – including whiskers – using masking fluid, through to the final small brush details, learn how to layer from light values to dark values, from warm tones to cool tones. Learn also how to create wet-on-wet washes, and how to soften those hard edges.
With the addition of a complimentary background and some foreground details, you will have completed a painting of one of the most elegant of big cats.
Suitable for all levels. All materials, tuition and light refreshments are included.
Venue: Tollerton Parish Rooms, Tollerton, Nottinghamshire, NG12 4ET
SUNDAY 21ST FEBRUARY 1 Day Domestic cats in pastel (£50)
If you own cats, or are wanting to get into painting cat portraits, then why not try your hand at this workshop.
Cats are perfectly suited to the pastel/velour combination, especially their soft fur.
You will learn how to create realistic tabby markings and soft fur textures.
In addition, there will be special emphasis in this workshop on the eyes, paying particular attention to the fine details of the eyes – the colours of the iris, and all-important reflections and highlights.
Use the techniques and skills learned in this workshop to paint your own, or your friends’ cat portraits.
Suitable for all levels. All materials, tuition and light refreshments are included.
Venue: Tollerton Parish Rooms, Tollerton, Nottinghamshire, NG12 4ET
SUNDAY 21ST MARCH 1 Day Tiger on Black Canford paper workshop (£50)
Tigers are a very popular subject in wildlife art, with good reason. They are extremely striking cats.
How can you treat this subject matter in a different way and make it even more dramatic?
Using mainly white pencil and a few choice colours on black Canford paper, create a striking and dramatic tiger drawing with a sense of something different.
Learn Vic’s technique of layering in sharp white pencil from low-key subtle tones to intense white details.
Touches of subtle coloured tones will add even more interest to your finished drawing.
Suitable for all levels. All materials, tuition and light refreshments are included.
Venue: Tollerton Parish Rooms, Tollerton, Nottinghamshire, NG12 4ET
SATURDAY 17TH & SUNDAY 18TH APRIL 2 day Zebra in acrylic workshop (£100)
Most wildlife/animal artists like to try different mediums, myself included. One of the most popular mediums is, of course, acrylic. As with pastels, the choice of materials and surfaces is wide-ranging and sometimes confusing.
Learn the techniques of creating finely detailed acrylic paintings in this workshop.
Day one will focus on mixing colour to the correct consistency, masking off, underpainting and creating your background.
Day two will be spent on layering and refining the details of the subject, using ever smaller brushes, before adding those finishing touches, such as foreground, for added depth and realism.
At the end of this weekend workshop, the whole process of painting wildlife in acrylic will be de-mystified.
Suitable for all levels. All materials, tuition and light refreshments are included.
Venue: Tollerton Parish Rooms, Tollerton, Nottinghamshire, NG12 4ET
SUNDAY 16TH MARCH 1 Day elephant in pencil workshop (£50)
Different subjects lend themselves to different mediums. The grey, almost solid-looking, yet highly textured hide of the elephant is perfectly suited to graphite pencil.
In this workshop, you will learn not only the basics of pencil drawing – setting the initial tones, etc, but also how to create the textures, shadows and highlights that will make the elephant’s skin so realistically rendered.
Learn how to create subtle and strong highlights with a putty eraser to finish off your detailed drawing.
Suitable for all levels. All materials, tuition and light refreshments are included.
Venue: Tollerton Parish Rooms, Tollerton, Nottinghamshire, NG12 4ET
SUNDAY 6TH JUNE 1 Day wolf in coloured pencil workshop (£50)
Coloured pencils are an increasingly popular medium for all subjects – including animals. They lend themselves to subtle tones and also detailed textures and details. Learn how to use coloured pencils to set down initial tones, and how best to layer fur texture. We will be working on a smooth surface to allow for plenty of fine details, such as the wolf’s eyes, nose and paws.
Add a few touches for foregrounds, and see just how realistic your coloured pencil work can be.
Suitable for all levels. All materials, tuition and light refreshments are included.
Venue: Tollerton Parish Rooms, Tollerton, Nottinghamshire, NG12 4ET
SUNDAY 27TH JUNE 1 Day Native portrait in pastel workshop (£50)
By popular request, the Native American portrait workshop is back. Pastels and velour paper are a great combination for human skin textures, be it soft skin or textured, weather-beaten skin like that of the Native American. Learn how contrasting warm and cool colours are applied to give the skin a realistic look, as well as the special requirements for painting lines, eyes, hair, etc.
Then have fun rendering beads, clothing and feathers, before sitting back and admiring how all those colours and textures work together to bring you portrait to life. This workshop is a must for anyone wanting to take their portrait painting to a new level.
Suitable for all levels. All materials, tuition and light refreshments are included.
Venue: Tollerton Parish Rooms, Tollerton, Nottinghamshire, NG12 4ET
